29th Annual Int’l Reggae & World Music Awards


QUEENS, NY, Tues. May 4, 2010: Roy `Gramps` Morgan, soca Star Machel Montano and Queen Ifrica on Sunday night emerged as the top winners at the 29th annual International Reggae & World Music Awards (IRAWMA), held at York College in Jamaica, Queens.
All three entertainers walked away with three awards each. Morgan won for Best Song, Best Crossover Song and Best New Entertainer while soca star, Machel Montano, who clinched won for three of his five nominations, including Entertainer of the Year, Most Outstanding Show Band and Best Calyso/Soca Entertainer.
Queens Ifrica also won three awards, including for Recording Artist of the Year and Most Educational Entertainer, while Taurus Riley, Elephant Man, Julian Marley and Alison Hinds took home one each.
Riley, who been nominated for six top awards only won in the Best Male Vocalist category while Marley took the win for Best CD. Elephant Man was named Best Male DJ/Rapper while Hinds won Best Female vocalist. Sean Paul won for Best Music Video while Barbee took home the Most Promising Entertainer award.
Beenie Man won for Most Outstanding Stage Personality while Freddie McGregor was named Most Consistent Entertainer.
The Best Backing Band award went to the New Kingston Band while Dean Fraser was named Best Instrumentalist. Shaggy & Friends were honored with a Community Service Award while Sumfest again won for Promoter of the Year.
Meanwhile, the Best Gospel Song award went to Omari while the Best Reggaeton award went to Pit Bull. Enrique Iglesias was named Best Latin Entertainer while the Best Compas Entertainer was Kryol La.
The Best African Entertainer was Samini while the Best Soukous Entertainer was Awilo Longomba. The Best Hip Hop/R&B Entertainer award went to Jamie Foxx while Mamadou Diabte won for Outstanding Contribution to World Music.
