It is a year ago Weekes was in studio recording his latest CD release, A Waterlogged Soul Kitchen, when news of the disaster flooded the nation's media. During a break in one of the late-night sessions, Weekes picked up a newspaper article on the spill. "I was astounded by the sheer magnitude of the numbers… very quickly the lyrics started to form themselves," he recounts. "94 planes, 6000 ships, 3 million feet of boom/35,000 people to help clean up this gloom/drill, baby drill, baby drill…"
"I stopped the session, wrote out the song and before the night was done, we had recorded it for the album. It was one of those rare moments in the studio when everything just came together naturally", continued Weekes. The following day, guitar legend Mike Pinera, formerly of 60s rock band Iron Butterfly, which earned the first platinum record ever for the single "Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida," happened to visit the recording studio. "He heard us working on 'Drill' with our engineer, Chris Laybourne, and was really taken by it. Right away he offered to play guitar on the track and his piece turned out to be a vital element of the song."
Weekes, felt compelled to do what he could to "keep the conversation going" when he learnt that "big oil companies have returned to business as usual despite the biggest environmental disaster in U.S. history". felt compelled to do what he could to "keep the conversation going."
"I wanted to remind all of us that there are still efforts to be made and there are organizations that need our support." The Southern Environmental Law Center recently stated, "While BP and other oil companies repeat claims that operations like the Deepwater Horizon will have little or no negative impact on life in and around the Gulf of Mexico, Gulf Coast communities, the seafood industry and tourism are still recovering, and spilled oil still darkens marshes and beaches."
Taj Weekes & Adowa invite you to enjoy a Free Download of "Drill" in remembrance of the Gulf Oil Spill and encourage you to go a day without filling up your gasoline tank.
