Prosecutors Oppose Buju Banton's Bail Motion

Prosecutors seem bent on making it real difficult for Buju Banton, every step of the way. Banton's legal team has filed a motion only last week, seeking bail and a new trial, however US prosecutors have now officially opposed the motion.

In a document sent to Buju's legal team, headed by David Markus, Assistant US Attorney James Preston says he is opposed to granting the reggae singer bail pending his appeal and sentencing.

According to the attorney's office, this motion is without merit and should be denied.

Mr. Preston argued that the type of charges for which Buju, 37 was convicted; carry a mandatory period of detention before sentencing ... unless there is a likelihood that the application for a new trial will be successful.

And Mr. Preston does not believe this will happen and therefore argues that bail should not be granted.

Mr. Preston also indicated that his office intends to reply to the motion for Buju's new trial.

Buju could wait up to three months for sentencing.
